BURBERRY

To coincide with Black History Month UK in 2021, Burberry partnered with MANJU Journal on a visually striking photographic series titled 'Together and ONE'. The project explored contemporary notions of Black identity in Africa, drawing inspiration from two photographic pioneers: American photojournalist Kwame Brathwaite— whose work helped galvanise the Black Is Beautiful movement in the 1960s— and Ghanaian image-maker Philip Kwame Apagya, celebrated for his joyful studio portraits and vividly painted backdrops.

Each image stands both independently and collectively, examining themes of class, wealth, mental health, education, motherhood, and unity.

The project was produced in Ghana by an all-Ghanaian team including Belgian-Ghanaian photographer Kwabena Sekyi Appiah-Nti, Manju Journal’s creative director Richmond Orlando Mensah and stylist Kusi Kubi. 'Together and ONE' received widespread international attention and was featured across leading fashion and culture platforms including AnOther Magazine, SHOWstudio, NOWNESS, Dazed, Glamour, Highsnobiety, and others.
