REGINA
Gabriel Moses’ Debut Exhibition Is A Testament to the Women in his Life
Gabriel Moses, one of the most exciting voices in contemporary photography, presents 'Regina'-an intimate, deeply personal exhibition that captures the complexity and beauty of modern Black identity. London-based and drawing on both his South London upbringing and Nigerian heritage, Moses brings 50 striking photographs spanning music, fashion, sport, and documentary storytelling to the brutalist confines of 180 Strand, alongside the premiere of two new short films, including Ijó, commissioned by 180 Studios, which follows young ballet dancers in Lagos, Nigeria. Inspired from a young age by black-and-white ancestral photography, and influenced by icons such as Gordon Parks and Malick Sidibé, Moses’ work reflects a nuanced dialogue between heritage, aspiration, and belonging. Known for his collaborations with major musicians and fashion brands, he brings his distinctive visual language to Regina, blending portraiture, fashion, and documentary techniques to explore identity, community, and contemporary British culture. Each image contributes to a larger conversation about representation, visibility, and the intersections of art, fashion, and society, revealing Moses’ technical mastery and singular artistic vision.
'Regina, it’s essentially my mind in the film – it’s the things I see as beautiful,’ Moses explains. ‘It’s moments I kind of wanted to put on the screen. I wanted to tell an international story, I wanted people to be able to relate to it and see themselves within my work.’
A self-taught photographer, Moses was offered his first directing role with Nike at the age of eighteen and went on to be the youngest photographer to shoot a cover for Dazed. He has collaborated with brands and designers including Adidas, Beats by Dre, Dior, Moncler, Supreme, Apple, Burberry, Virgil Abloh and Pharrell. His photographs have been featured in publications including Harper’s Bazaar, The Face, i-D, 032c and The New York Times.
Gabriel Moses: Regina’ is at 180 The Strand until April 30, 2023.
