HOMESICK
Mous Lamrabat's solo exhibition reflects on the notions of identity, belonging and the complexity of origin
Homesick, presented at Loft Art Gallery in Marrakech, is a measured return for the Belgian-Moroccan photographer, unfolding across twenty newly produced works. The exhibition reflects on identity, displacement, and cultural inheritance, tracing how belonging is shaped between places rather than anchored to one. Moving between Morocco and Belgium, Lamrabat reconsiders heritage through a contemporary visual lens that resists nostalgia in favour of reinvention. Based in Belgium and celebrated for his striking approach to portraiture, the photographer has built a practice that deftly merges tradition with modern aesthetics. His images balance symbolism, fashion, and colour to create portraits that feel both personal and emblematic. Since his debut solo exhibition, Mousganistan in Sint-Niklaas, Belgium, 2019, his distinctive style has led to collaborations with Vogue, Elle, and GQ. With Homesick, Lamrabat returns to Morocco not simply as a point of origin, but as a site of reflection−where memory, distance, and identity are continually renegotiated.
The photographs unfold as visual testimonies of memory and sensation, distilling Lamrabat’s lived experience of Morocco into carefully composed scenes. The Moroccan star−both a national emblem and a personal symbol−recurs throughout the series, operating as a quiet conduit between nostalgia and aspiration, distance and return. These images move effortlessly between the intimate and the collective, articulating an enduring attachment to place and a desire to hold memory intact across geography. Timed to coincide with the 1-54 Marrakech Art Fair, the exhibition positions itself as a cultural bridge between Morocco and a global audience. Visually arresting and conceptually grounded, Homesick reaffirms Lamrabat’s precision as an image-maker and his nuanced engagement with cross-cultural dialogue.
''Lamrabat’s cross-cultural works reflect Loft Art Gallery’s aim to create a major art bridge between Morocco and the rest of the world, maintaining a focus on Africa. The photographs on display can be read as visual testimonies of memories and sensations, capturing the essence of his experience of Morocco.''
