LIMINAL RITE

The first in a series, this story is a visual investigation of transformation, duality, and transitional states of being

Transformation takes place in moments of transition; where identities shift, fracture, and reform. It is within this tension between becoming and being that Liminal Rite, a new visual series by photographers Jude Lartey and Yussif Nii Quao Solomon, takes form. As an ongoing body of work rooted in Accra, the project examines transformation, duality, and transitional states of being, approaching identity as something constructed, performed, and continually in flux. Anchored in themes of identity and selfhood, the series unfolds gradually rather than conclusively. Human presence is traced through moments where appearances shift and reassemble, resisting fixed or singular readings of the self. Transformation is framed not as a singular event, but as a continuous condition; subtle, layered, and unresolved.

The project unfolds through a set of distinct personas; Holy Veil, Anansewaa, Obaasima, Iron Heir, Blondie, and Butterfly Core each operating as an archetype through which states of transition and becoming are embodied and reinterpreted. Positioned between visibility and vulnerability, concealment and revelation, becoming and being, the work invites reflection on the fluid, layered nature of identity. Each image functions as a rite, an offering, a passage, or a moment suspended between what has been and what is still emerging. Across Liminal Rite, transformation is understood as a continuous process rather than a fixed destination. The work dwells deliberately in moments of uncertainty, where identity remains unresolved and meaning is still forming. In these liminal spaces, the series reveals transformation as one of life’s most enduring and necessary rites of passage.
