MOKORO
A multimedia exhibition celebrating the sanctuary of sisterhood and power of authentic artistry
In celebrating the creativity of Warembo Wasanii, an art workshop and studio space founded by Joan Otieno in the informal settlement of Korogocho in Nairobi, Kenya; photographer Kristin Lee Moolman, stylist Louise Ford and curators Sophie Strobele and Emmanuelle Atlan met together in September 2021 to capture and support the young women making unique and extraordinary art pieces and costumes sourced from trash and imported waste materials dumped into the country. Mokoro translating into 'Mother' in Sheng unites photographs, films, interviews, sculptures, sound installations and artworks created by young women from the art studio highlighting the transformative power of authentic artistry and the strength of collective empowerment.
Within the walls of the art studio Warembo Wasanii, the young women craft pieces entirely from refuse sourced from the neighboring Dandora and Kariobangi landfill to create visually stunning and beautifully crafted wearable sculptures using bottle caps, Pampers boxes, Colgate wrappers and yoghurt pots. They are encouraged and empowered to express their artistic creativity as it is a means to them to gain financial freedom.
MOKORO was on view at Gallery Mercier et Associes in Paris as well as the Victoria & Albert Museum during London Design Festival, 2022.
